60th Annual General Meeting of the Concrete Society

Chief Executive Officer, Claire Ackerman provides a summary of proceedings

The 60th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Concrete Society was held in-person and online on 1 July 2026.

The AGM is required as part of the constitution of the Concrete Society and has an important role in the governance and management of the Society.

The President, Honorary Treasurer and CEO all provide a report to the AGM. This provides an annual report to members and also ensures that the annual accounts for the Society are formally accepted allowing them to be filed by the CEO.

Claire Ackerman, chief executive, kicked off the meeting and reflected that “It was a year ago that we announced the rebrand and new website for the Concrete Society. In 2025 we brought back the Evolving Concrete technical conference, for the first time since Covid, and completed the member survey to inform how we develop and grow the Society. The extensive and constructive feedback being shared is much appreciated and will shape the future of the Society“. To find out more about current priorities, read the CEO report, as published in Concrete magazine, May.

In his report as President, Steve Thorpe said ” I am pleased to present my Presidents Report for the session 2025/26, my first year in Office and in this, the 60th year of the Society. The year has been very busy, and I must say, very enjoyable. I am very much honoured to be your President.”

There were no changes to the senior officers, who were elected for a two year term in 2025.

Thanks were noted to outgoing Council member, Martyn Fear. Bernadette Kinsella, outgoing chair of the Wales region, was voted in as a Council member for a two year term.

Two associate Council member roles were agreed by members and the 2026/27 Council session will include a representative from the Technical Executive Committee and our Young Member Committees.

Honorary members elected by Council were stated as Nick Dawson and Richard Day.

The final order of the day was to vote on Resolutions that impact the constitution of the Concrete Society.

  • That pursuant to Paragraph 47(3)(b) of Schedule 4 of the Companies Act 2006 (Commencement No. 5, Transitional Provisions and Savings) Order 2007, the directors be and are permitted to exercise their power under section 175 of the Companies Act 2006 to authorise directors’ conflicts of interest.
  • That the existing articles of association of the Company (including, for the avoidance of doubt, all provisions of the Company’s memorandum of association which, by virtue of section 28 of the Companies Act 2006, are to be treated as provisions of the Company’s articles of association) be deleted in their entirety and replaced with the articles of association produced to the meeting of the Company.
  • The role of Secretary to Council is stated in the Articles of Association. Members are asked to consider the appointment of Claire Ackerman, Chief Executive as Secretary to Council, in accordance with Article 28.
  • That the existing Byelaws of the company be deleted in their entirety and replaced with Byelaws produced to the meeting of the Company, in accordance with Article 53.

All members were in agreement, and the resolutions were duly passed by the required majority.

The AGM was announced as closed with all business transacted as per the agenda.
The AGM is open to all members, so keep an eye out for the calling notice in May 2027 when registration to attend will open.
