For sole traders, students and anyone interested in concrete.
University of Derby
This course develops your knowledge about aggregates, cement and concrete, and the standards, specifications and other requirements that apply to them. It includes aspects such as the methods used to sample and test aggregates and ready mixed concrete in a safe way.
You will also focus on the principles of concrete mix design, the methods of making and using ready mixed concrete and knowledge of the techniques used to manage product quality so as to satisfy the needs of your producers and customers.
You’ll mainly study online, and you will come to Derby for three weekend tutorials during the seven month course. These consist of a mixture of classroom teaching and discussion with teaching staff and other students.
If you want to progress your career in construction or concrete materials, this course is ideal for you. Based upon on-line learning and supported by three tutorial days it’s aimed at technicians and technologists who are seeking formal recognition of their experience, but you’ll also find it useful if you want to broaden your knowledge of the science and properties of concrete.
You’ll gain an understanding around the specification and production of concrete and the constituents of concrete. You’ll also learn how to apply the methodologies that underpin the use and control of concrete in construction and concrete products.
This course is suitable for:
- Supervisors and managers in the cement, ready mixed concrete and concrete products industries
- Supervisors and managers working in construction
- Staff working for consulting engineers, independent testing laboratories and associated professionals
- Employees from related supply and equipment manufacturing industries.
The course runs over one year.
This is recognised by the Institute of Concrete Technology as an appropriate qualification to support an application for Associate Membership.
If you’re already employed in the concrete industry, or have an interest in it, this programme will enable you to gain an internationally recognised academic qualification focused on management and supervisory roles. It reflects UK and EU standards and best practice, and will help you if you’re a manager and wish to acquire professional status.
Compulsory modules on the programme:

Imperial College London
The course aims to provide training in the analysis, design and assessment of concrete structures under general conditions and their impact on reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, using advanced analytical and numerical techniques. The course has evolved to cover Eurocodes, durability/repair of structural concrete materials and structural dynamics. Ideally suited to practising engineers with relevant experience, recent graduates with an appropriate first degree will also greatly benefit from attending.
Institute of Concrete Technology
The ICT entry-level qualification Stage 1 Concrete Practice, formerly administered by City & Guilds of London Institute, enables technicians, operatives, batch plant supervisors and concrete mixer operators/drivers to achieve a formal certificate in recognition of their success in mastering the basic objectives of activities in the concrete industry. It also serves as the first step for new recruits heading for management in the technology of concrete production. Successful candidates are eligible for membership of the ICT as Technician Members and are entitled to use the designatory letters TechICT after their names.
Dates for this exam in 2026 are: 3 June and 2 December.
The first step in the process of obtaining a recognised qualification in concrete for candidates with some previous experience is the ICT course Concrete Technology and Construction : Stage 2 – General Principles. On completion of the course, candidates’ knowledge of the essential principles of concrete is assessed, currently by a 3-hour closed-book examination. Successful candidates are eligible for membership of the ICT as Affiliate Members and are entitled to use the designatory letters AffICT after their names.
2026 date for this exam is 12 May 2026. Registration for this exam has now closed.
Success at Stage 2 is normally required for enrolment on the next stage, Concrete Technology & Construction: Stage 3 – Practical Applications. This course provides training in the application of the principles of concrete technology to the processes of production and construction techniques. On completion of the course, candidates’ knowledge of the essential principles of concrete is assessed, currently by a 3-hour closed-book examination. Successful candidates are eligible for membership of the ICT as Associate Members and are entitled to use the designatory letters AMICT after their names.
Success at Stage 3, combined with a reasonable length of service and experience at a suitable level of responsibility, are the usual prerequisites for application to enrol on the Advanced Concrete Technology course.
2026 date for this exam is 13 May 2026. Registration for this exam has now closed.
The Diploma in Advanced Concrete Technology has world-wide acceptance as the leading qualification in concrete technology.
The aim of the course is to provide a teaching and learning experience for participants such that they obtain an in-depth knowledge at an advanced level of a wide variety of topics within the field of concrete technology. The course fully prepares candidates for two 3-hour examinations for the Diploma in Advanced Concrete Technology. Between the start of the course and the final examinations the candidate is required to carry out either an individual project or a number of individual assignments which are assessed by the ICT examiners.
Candidates who are successful in both examinations and who submit a satisfactory individual project or individual assignments are eligible for membership of the ICT as Corporate Members. They are entitled to use the designatory letters MICT after their names.
