Why did you become a member of the Society and why would you recommend it?
I’ve worked in the construction industry for over 30 years, and I believe it’s one of the most exciting sectors to be involved in. However, it doesn’t always have the best reputation and is currently struggling to attract new talent. As a major tier 1 contractor, we are deeply involved with concrete and concrete structures, but we’re also focused on advancing more sustainable and low-carbon materials. This is where being part of the Concrete Society really aligns with our goals—it provides valuable insight and support in driving innovation in this space. I would definitely recommend membership to anyone passionate about concrete or construction sustainability.
Why did you first decide to volunteer for the (Region) committee?
I’ve always felt that to truly benefit from these professional organisations, you need to be actively involved and offer your support. Volunteering for the committee was a natural way to contribute and help shape the industry’s future.
Could you describe some of the tasks you have typically done whilst on the committee?
For the past two years, I have served as the committee secretary. This role involves managing communications, organising meetings, and supporting the committee’s activities to ensure everything runs smoothly.
What have you most enjoyed about being part of the (Region) committee?
The committee is a hugely committed and dynamic group with clear objectives. It’s been a pleasure to work alongside such passionate individuals who are all dedicated to advancing our industry.
How has volunteering helped you in building your professional network?
Volunteering has been invaluable both for personal development and for business growth. It has allowed me to connect with a wide range of professionals and broaden my understanding of industry challenges and innovations.
What advice would you give to anyone considering joining a Society Regional committee?
I would say: get involved! It’s a fantastic opportunity for personal development, expanding your business network, and genuinely having some fun while contributing to the industry.
Why did you decide to go for the (Regional) Chair position and what are your aims for your two-year term?
I wanted to continue the excellent work started by Katie, the current chair, particularly in growing a diverse membership and promoting the industry as an exciting career path to younger people. Over the next two years, I aim to build on this momentum and ensure the committee remains vibrant and impactful.
