Name: James Kilby
Job Title: Area General Manager
Organisation: Holcim UK
Date joined (Regional) committee: Sept 2024 West Midlands – member of south west since 2018
Why did you become a member of the Society and why would you recommend it?
I became a member to increase my network, share the benefits of the society and to try and give something back to the industry that has supported me for many years. It has been extremely rewarding for me to meet and connect with so many people with such vast experiences, and I have had the privilege of working with a groups of fantastic committee members that have all supported me in everything I have tried to implement.
Why did you first decide to volunteer for the (Region) committee?
Back in the southwest I was working in a new part of the industry to me, I was in unfamiliar territory and I could see the benefits of being part of a recognised society, that was being run by a small selection of longstanding friends, I’ll always be grateful for the introduction to the society from Seb and David.
Could you describe some of the tasks you have typically done whilst on the committee?
I have been privileged to have chaired two regions, while in the southwest I was honoured to have a really supportive committee that completely changed the dynamics of the region, relocation and hosting the annual lunch and hosting golf days along with technical talks. My role has been to keep on track the progress of these events, keeping the marketing and budgets on track, while getting the best value for money to the attendees on the day.
What have you most enjoyed about being part of the (Region) committee?
Being part of a family of committee members that all want to do the same thing and give something back, support the industry and help getting people connected.
How has volunteering helped you in building your professional network?
Absolutely yes, it’s been a huge part of my professional life.
What advice would you give to anyone considering joining a Society Regional committee?
Don’t hesitate, reach out and connect, be prepared to give time, as a small collective of people who have full time jobs, we are always keen to hear from people that can commit.
Why did you decide to go for the (Regional) Chair position and what are your aims for your two-year term?
I was asked to chair the Midlands committee by Kathy. I think my energy and vision in the Southwest was recognised and the Midlands needed an injection of fresh new ideas.
