Ian Evans, Principal Engineer at the Concrete Society, has achieved Incorporated Engineer status. A member of the Institute of Concrete Technology, Ian has been successful in his application to the Engineering Council for this professional acknowledgement of competence, skills and experience.
What is an Incorporated Engineer
Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status offers important recognition as a professional in the various branches of engineering. It is intended for professionals who manage and apply current and developing technologies. They often undertake engineering design, manufacture, construction, and operation. They demonstrate a commitment to professional standards and continuous development. Find out more from the Engineering Council.
Ian explains how IEng was the best route for him and his career
“As someone who has worked in the industry for a number of years and taken the opportunity for practical and academic learning throughout my career, the IEng route acknowledges my skills and experience, without any bias as to when or how I gained that knowledge.”
“Many people gain degrees at the start of their career, but for those who don’t, returning to university later in their career may not suit them or their employers. It is also important to acknowledge different learning routes work better for different people. Personally, I have benefited from a huge amount of learning from peers and learning from doing as well as more formal learning, such as the ICT Stages or the University of Derby qualifications”.
“The benefit of the IEng is that it recognises the skills gained from within a working environment and that the individual is suitably competent to undertake a role at a higher level. Therefore, as the UK’s first Concrete Technologist to gain IEng, I would encourage those with an equivalent diploma level qualification that this is an alternative route map to professional status”.
