The Devon & Cornwall Region is pleased to offer a unique opportunity to tour HMS Courageous, one of the UK’s most historically significant former nuclear-powered submarines.

Against the backdrop of major construction and reinforced concrete works currently underway at HMNB Devonport (Plymouth Dockyard), a programme valued at over £1 billion, the event provides a timely reflection on the dockyard’s rich engineering heritage. Current projects include substantial structural concrete works for new dock sealing caissons, tunnel support systems, and the construction, repair and upgrade of submarine berths and dock walls, all supported by purpose-built on-site batching facilities.

As the Concrete Society explores the vital role concrete continues to play in shaping the future of Plymouth Dockyard, attendees will also gain an appreciation of its past through a fully guided tour of HMS Courageous. Steeped in naval history, this former nuclear submarine offers a fascinating insight into Britain’s maritime and engineering achievements.

This event is strictly limited to 20 guests. This is a free event although we do ask attendees to make a £10 donation on the day for charity.

Please note:

• Entry to Courageous is via a 17-rung vertical ladder.  Anyone uncertain about negotiating this ladder, should not undertake the tour.
• We regret that Pregnant women may not undertake a tour, and anyone that has recently had major surgery or has a serious medical condition are advised not to undertake the tour.
• Sensible footwear to be worn – no flip flops, high heels or sandals.
• Visitors are advised to wear trousers or leggings.
• There is no requirement for ‘Workplace’ PPE, although High Vis is required when walking to/from the compound.
• Photography is not permitted within the Naval Base nor within the submarine.
• Mobile phones are to be switched off within the Courageous Compound (safe storage of valuables is provided on site).
• No on-site parking is only available.
• The decommissioned and defueled nuclear-powered submarine Courageous is located within the Security Perimeter of HM Naval Base Devonport.  An increase in Security Alert Levels or conflicting work requirements, may result in short notice cancellation of tours.
