Devon and Cornwall Awards Shortlist 2026

Entries for the 2026 Devon and Cornwall Awards have now closed and we are delighted to announce the five shortlisted projects

Entries for the 2026 Devon and Cornwall Awards have now closed and we are delighted to announce the five shortlisted projects:

RT Decant Bunker & HDR Facility

The UHP Oncology Unit Extension is a specialist healthcare development built within a former courtyard car park, comprising a reinforced concrete frame with steel upper and single-storey sections. The project provides LINAC and HDR brachytherapy bunkers, recovery spaces, and treatment planning offices. The LINAC (medical linear accelerator) bunker was constructed using specialist high-density Magnadense concrete, selected for its exceptional radiation shielding properties, enabling reduced wall thicknesses within a constrained building footprint. The concrete required bespoke mix design, enhanced curing methods, and close temperature monitoring to manage early-age thermal cracking and achieve a crack-free finish. The project significantly enhances cancer treatment capacity within the South West, while also delivering social value through training opportunities, community engagement, and charitable initiatives.

A30 Long Rock Bypass and NGCS

In January 2022 Tarmac were awarded a project by National Highways (NH) to assist with the feasibility and detailed design to undertake a trial of the Next Generation Concrete Surfacing (NGCS) and Longitudinal Diamond Grinding (LDG) on a section of the A30 Long Rock Bypass. AECOM were appointed as Principal Designer by NH and have worked closely with the NH Concrete Centre of Excellence Team and Tarmac to determine the most appropriate profiles for the NGCS trial.

NGCS is a new process that undertakes both ‘grooving’ and ‘grinding’ of the existing concrete carriageway surface which Tarmac delivered as a single pass process to improve texture, water egress and aid in reducing the dB noise levels of the surface.

  • Client: National Highways
  • Principal Designer: AECOM

Development of Real Green Concrete (RGC)

Una Developments has developed technology, Real Green Concrete (RGC), an innovative cementitious binder that uses industrial by-products and waste materials sourced from sectors including steel manufacturing, power generation, and mining. RGC is a 100% Portland Cement free binder designed to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete.

Una Developments is dedicated to the ongoing development of high-performance, sustainable cementitious materials that demonstrate superior characteristics compared with existing eco-concretes and are tailored to meet the requirements of different end-use applications. Our novel, patented binder formulations have substantial potential to contribute to climate change mitigation and the decarbonisation of the construction sector worldwide.

St Marys Hospital Extension

Cornish Concrete Products (CCP) were approached to assist with developing a solution for the proposed extension to the St Marys Hospital on the Isles of Scilly. Located around 27 miles from the tip of Lands End and with the lack of any substantial concrete production facilities on the island, the use of precast concrete offsite manufacture was the ideal solution.

This was a unique method of construction driven by the facilities available on the islands. On the mainland, this project would undoubtedly have involved far greater volumes of in situ concrete. The careful consideration of all the design aspects to fully utilise modern methods of construction was fundamental to the success of this project.

  • Structural Engineers: MBA Consulting

The Story of Emily Museum

The Story of Emily Museum celebrates the life of humanitarian Emily Hobhouse, who campaigned against the UK’s use of concentration camps in the Boer War.

Located in her birthplace, the east Cornish village of St Ive, the museum site encompasses the rectory where she grew up in addition to a collection of new build and rebuilt elements. These are defined by two sharply different characters – a modern take on the traditional Cornish vernacular for the visitor amenities and staff facilities, and a contrasting, zinc-clad form for the exhibition on the war.

Whilst not an expressed building finish material, the use of concrete in the War Rooms museum is paramount to the success of the building
