installed the last of 155 giant

concrete beams at the Astmoor

Bridgewater Viaduct. The installation

of the 110-tonne beam at the viaduct

in Runcorn is the last of the huge

concrete beams to be put in place on

the Mersey Gateway project.

The viaduct is a major structure

that is being created to connect the

new bridge to the Central Expressway

in Runcorn. The beams will support

the reinforced concrete road deck

and is a key part of the new 9.2km

link road, diverting the majority

of traffic across the new Mersey

Gateway Bridge to relieve congestion

on the Silver Jubilee Bridge. The last

beam was installed in March – the

239th beam to be put in place across

the project.

Each beam measures around

40m in length, and weighs up to 110

tonnes – equivalent to 83 medium-

sized family cars. In total, 5885m of

beams have now been installed, with

a total combined weight of some

16,177 tonnes.

Each beam is installed by a

650-tonne crawler crane, and

requires pinpoint accuracy as they are

lowered into place.

THE Competition and Markets

Authority (CMA) is to review long-

standing undertakings relating to

the National House-Building Council


The NHBC provides new home

structural warranties for over 1.6

million UK homes, covering around

80% of new homes. The undertakings

were given in 1995, following an

investigation by the Monopolies

and Mergers Commission (MMC),

which found that some NHBC

rules restricted competition from

companies looking to offer alternative

warranty schemes. As a result, NHBC

amended its rules to remove the

restrictions and enable its members to

use other warranty providers.

The NHBC has now requested that

the CMA review the undertakings.

It argues that there is now more

competition from other providers

and that house-builders purchasing

new home structural warranties now

have greater choice. The NHBC also

says that changes to regulation and

consumer protection have removed

the need for it to approve other home

warranty schemes used by the NHBC’s

registered builders, as it is currently

required to do by the undertakings.

Hanson is planning to invest

£12 million at its Victoria Deep

Water Terminal on the Thames at


Hanson is proposing to replace

two existing concrete batching plants

with three new ones enclosed within

a building. This new building will also

house the raw materials for concrete

production, principally sand and

gravel. Situated on the north-west

side of the Greenwich peninsular, the

terminal is an important strategic

site, which is safeguarded as an

industrial wharf in the London plan

and the Greenwich local plan.

The new plants will be used in the

redevelopment of the Greenwich

peninsula and also for major

infrastructure projects in London,

including the Thames Tideway

Tunnel, Silvertown Road Tunnel and

Crossrail 2.

demand is expected to grow, following a 2.4% improvement in 2016 and

surpass 4.1 billion tonnes. However, global ex-China cement consumption is

projected to grow by an average annual rate of 4% until 2021. “The continuing

has implications for the global cement market, and has brought much-needed

stability in terms of demand expectations not only in 2016 but in the coming

a new bus station and retail spaces.

The precast units were delivered in

March. The full project is expected to

be complete by spring 2018.
