Awards
|
The Concrete Society Awards have been run by The Society since 1968 and somewhere in excess of 500 awards have been given over that time. The Awards initiative recognises excellence in the use of concrete in New Structures, both in Civil Engineering and Building capacity. Entries have historically ranged from private houses, bridges, acoustic sound barring walls, waste water treatment works, theatre, museums, art centres, underground stations and innovative sculptures to name but a few.
To add to our portfolio of awards categories, we have recently introduced a new category of award, again under our new structures banner, and one which we feel compliments the above Civil Engineering and Building categories. We now enjoy receiving submissions for our Concrete Performance Award. The background to this additional category is based on the premise that for a number of years the Society Awards Judging Panel have been perplexed that whilst exemplorary use of concrete has been demonstrated in parts of submitted projects, when taken in the round, the overall use of concrete in the entry did not necessarily merit recognition as a Civil Engineering or Building category winner. The result, arguably, has been to under-recognise the contribution and performance of concrete in certain key critical applications.
The Award is for concrete in UK structures that were substantially completed within a 15-month window ie the 2010 award is relevant to projects from 2009 or in the last three months of 2008. Completion is intended in a structural rather than contractual sense and the Judges will decide, in doubtful cases, whether entries comply with the requirements.
Again, due to popular demand, we complete the set with our Mature Structures Award. This is aimed at structures over 25 years of age which have sustained the test of time and are judged worthy of recognition.
Criteria on which the Awards are judged follow:
|
|
|
|
For New Structures
|
|
|
| • |
Function suitability. |
| •* |
Visual appearance and harmony of the structure with its surroundings (not relevant for the Concrete Performance Award). |
| • |
Properties of concrete exploited in the design. |
| • |
Innovative use of concrete in composition, structure or form. |
| • |
Integration of structure and service. |
| • |
Value for money. |
| |
|
| |
* The Concrete Performance award does not include this aspect in its criteria for entry |

After the visits to the short-listed projects and judges’ deliberations are complete, the recipients of Certificate of Excellence will be informed of their accolade. Category Winners and the Overall Winner will be announced at the Awards Dinner and will receive a specially designed plaque for display at the structure.
The principal parties responsible for each project (eg client, architect, engineer, contractor) will receive a Certificate. Supplementary Certificates will also be provided to organisations with more limited or specialist involvement (eg material suppliers, specialist sub-contractors).
Other structures will be selected by the Judges for Certificates of Excellence.
Individually prepared Certificates will be issued to the principal parties for each project, with, again, supplementary Certificates for those with more limited involvement.

The judging criteria for the Mature Structures Award is similar to that for New structures, and will be judged by the same panel of Judges. There is no overall winner for the Mature Structures category – the Society offers Certificates of Excellence to all those who satisfy the criteria as above.
The Concrete Society Awards Dinner.
The presentation of the Winners’ Certificates and plaques takes place at The Society’s annual Awards Dinner.
This prestigious event now rightfully holds pride of place in the construction industry calendar. The event is to be held in London at the beginning of November. More details will follow on exact date and venue shortly. There will be guest speakers, audio visual presentations and great support from all involved in the projects and on the periphery.
The Dinner has become accustomed to attracting over 450 senior representatives of the construction industry
