How do we operate?
The Concrete Society operates a democratic partnership between
our members, elected representatives of our members
and The Society's full-time staff.

Council
The Concrete Society Council has overall control of The
Society. The Council establishes the policy and financial
framework for the Chief Executive, Richard England, and his staff to implement.
Elections for Council Members are held every year with
Council Members serving two years in office. The Council
comprises 18 elected Members including
the President, Immediate Past President, President Designate

Regional and Club Assembly (RCA)
The RCA is the focus for Regions and Club Committees within
The Society. It liaises with The Society's central office
on central support services, setting standards and
monitoring performance. It exchanges information on Region
and Club activities, comments on the policy and activities
of The Society in general, and makes recommendations
to Council. It proposes and implements policies for
strengthening and expanding the role of the Regions
and Clubs within the framework of The Concrete Society.
Membership of the RCA consists of two representatives from each
Region and Club. The Chairman is elected from the membership
of the Assembly. The current Chairman is Paul Browne, Grace Construction Products.
The RCA is represented on Council by six members, who
reflect the geographical spread of the Regions and Clubs.

Technical Executive Committee
The role of the Technical Executive Committee is to guide and give
direction to The Society’s technical programme. The specific aim is to
develop a practical, technical plan based on current issues facing the
concrete industry, prioritise key technical issues within the plan and
then communicate the plan to The Society’s three Standing Committees,
namely Construction, Materials and Design. The Committee is formed of
the Chairmen of the three standing committees, technical staff from The Concrete Society
and representatives from the concrete industry, reflecting the variety of disciplines.
The current Chairman is Professor Peter C Hewlett.

Construction Group
The Concrete Society Construction Group has the general responsibility
for a range of projects where there is an emphasis on construction techniques
and processes involving concrete. For a particular project, it oversees the
formation of a working party, monitors its progress and will finally review
the resulting document prior to publication. It is broadly given direction by and reports to the
Technical Executive Committee. The broad-based membership
of the Construction Group tries to reflect a range of disciplines associated
with construction and currently includes representatives from consultants,
contractors and trade associations. This ensures that current problems in the
industry related to construction using in-situ or precast concrete are discussed
and that, when necessary, authoritative impartial guidance is prepared. Current
and recently completed projects include formwork: a guide to good practice,
checklist for erecting and dismantling falsework, permanent formwork in
construction, and controlled permeability formwork.

Materials Group
The Concrete Society Materials Group has the general responsibility for a
range of projects where there is an emphasis on concrete’s constituent
materials. For a particular project, it oversees the formation of a working
party, monitors its progress and will finally review the resulting
document for publication. It is broadly given direction by and reports to the Technical
Executive Committee. The membership of the Materials
Group tries to reflect a range of disciplines associated with concreting
materials and their use, and currently includes representatives from consultants,
contractors, trade associations and academics. Current and recently completed
projects include diagnosis of deterioration of structures, guide to the surface
treatments for protection and enhancement of concrete, concrete and the
environment, moisture in concrete and the performance of impermeable floor
coverings, core strength of in-situ concrete, a guide to the selection of
admixtures for concrete, self compacting concrete, and the role of minimum
cement content in concrete.

Design Group
As its name implies, the Design Group has overall technical responsibility for
a range of projects concerned with various aspects of the design of concrete
structures. For a particular project, it oversees the formation of the working
party, monitors progress and in due course approves the resulting document
(e.g. Technical Report) for publication. It is broadly given direction by and reports to the
Technical Executive Committee. The composition of the
Design Group reflects the range of disciplines involved in design and currently it
includes consultants, contractors and researchers. Current and recently
completed projects include durable post-tensioned concrete bridges,
deflections of slabs and beams, post-tensioned concrete floors, strengthening
concrete structures with fibre composites, shear reinforcement for flat slabs
and tension zone behaviour.
